Fertilising

Organic Pros and Cons

Organic fertilisers are better for the soil and healthy soil is better for the plants that grow in it. The trouble with organic fertilisers is that they can be smelly for a day or two after application, they’re slower-acting and usually weaker. But don’t think of slow action and mildness as bad points. That’s how you should feed grass – slowly and mildly. Stronger, faster-acting fertilisers can encourage weak, soft growth that is not drought-tolerant and can be a more juicy target for pests. Fast-acting fertilisers quickly wash out of the soil so soon need to be re-applied. Using too much fertiliser or applying it too often causes rank growth that has to be cut more often.

Go Easy on Nitrogen

lawn-tree-in-yard.jpgWhatever type of fertiliser you choose, apply it as directed and always apply during good soaking rain or a deep watering. Water the fertiliser in after application and look for a product that has 15% or less Nitrogen (the proportions of Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) will be listed on the pack). Lawn fertilisers with more than 15% Nitrogen make the grass go green quickly but also encourage the speedy build-up of thatch and soil acidity and plants need a more balanced diet.

If you drop too much in one spot, try to spread it or water it in straight away to prevent burning. Repeat this process in spring-time, mid November, early March and just before winter. Fertilising is not recommended during the humid months for established lawns as it may bring on a fungus in your lawn.
